Alka Yagnik was superb in Umrao Jaan. She proved that no one can beat her in Indain Classial Music. Even Lata Mangeshkar praised her and said in one of her interviews that Alka Yagnik was awesome in Umrao Jaan. I think this reviewer knows more that Lataji or Javed saab or the other bunch of reviewers who have adored the music of Umrao Jaan. Alka Yagnik’s outstanding renditions are to die for!

it ws a delite to read on Rafi Sahab.. though I wish u included his duets, in the discussion here, jst as well… no writing on Rafi sahab is complete without his immortal duets with Geeta Dutt & Asha Bhonsle…

Jst listen to Rafi & Asha in “achhaji main haari…” or Rafi – Geeta Dutt in “Chal diye banda nawaaz…” & “jane kahan mera jigar gaya ji…”
lovely duets!!! Rafi & Geeta r not merely singing the lyrics.. they r conversating with each other thru these lyrics… what a combo!!!

though Asha- Kishore duets are very popular among the golden classics.. bt I think.. its Rafi-Geeta pair that wins hands down in Peppy/romantic numbers..

It is one of the worst reviews i have ever read. I think this is the only negative review for Umrao Jaan. Everyone went ga ga over Alka Yagnik’s outstanding singing and classical brilliance in all the songs. Even Javed Akhtar appreciated Alkaji and said in print that she has outdone herself in these songs. Either the reviewer is an Alka hater(which is very strange) or there is some problem with his ears(i am really serious).

The most ridiculous part is that the Melody Queen has been called as nasal in a song.

@Avdhoot – Its neither “tuse gaye” nor “tu tu kahe”. Its TOSE KAHE.
wouldve been better if instead of “tu tu kahe” it wudve been “aap aap kahe”

exactly…me too was thinking of the title song when I saw the movie name…that is such a beautiful song, isn’t it?

And again I too love songs which involve a conversation – the ones which come to mind are –
- gungunarahe hai bhavre…
- achcha toh hum chalte hain…
- abhi na jao chod kar…

such lovely compositions…

The lines should make you sit up and take notice. There is nothing new in Saawariya’s lyrics. The words, the thoughts are all the same that have been in the industry since ages.

I agree with you on Shreya. She is not a great singer. Kunal might not be the best singer now, but I like him for his voice. It has a quality to it which attracts me the moment I hear it.

Your review is a bit harsh concerning the lyrics. What do you expect the lyrics of the song to be? Please enlighten me. The lyrics were actually pretty good. The only thing I do agree with you on is the “strained” singing by Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal. No doubt, Alka’s voice has aged and I wouldn’t be surprised if she developed a throat problem like her mother. She has sung much better numbers before. It’s too bad she was not able to deliver justice to Chabeela. Nevertheless, I do think she tried hard the song and it’s the best female solo in the album. As for Shreya, she’s never been one of my favorites. She tries way too hard for songs that are not meant for her. She’s been paraded around as if she is the best singer in bollywood. What happened to her here? These naughty/mischievous songs are definitely not her forte. Overall, Shaan did the best with his “Jab Se Tere Naina”. I don’t care too much about Kunal Ganjawala. He’s average like Shreya. Anyway, each to their own.
